When Your Plans Don’t Work

By Dave Peters, Ministry Resident

I’ve made a lot of plans in my life. Plans for jobs, plans for relationships, plans for the church, and plans for myself. I think of Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

I’ve found that plans don’t workout how I want them. I plan to get a job and I get a call making it clear I wasn’t getting it. I plan for a hopeful relationship and nothing happens. I plan for a school and get rejected. I plan a large purchase and end up paying for car repairs. I plan a bible study and nobody shows up. We all make plans.

What do we do when our plans don’t work?

Proverbs 19:21 tells us that the purpose of the Lord will stand. This is easy to say but when you feel the disappointment of a lost potential what do you do?

The first step is realizing it’s okay to be disappointed. Our plans are not the Lord’s plans and the Lord’s purpose always rules, but that doesn’t mean we must pretend our plans had no bearing. It is okay to be saddened about a lost plan.

The reality is our plans won’t work but God’s will. We are called to make our plans as ones that realize the Lord’s purpose will stand. Good or bad, reward or nothing, when we place our focus upon Christ and his purpose our plans can stand. Our plans are not about what we do but what God does with what we give him and was always his.

Lost plans hurt, lost events, lost relationships; they are little scars but the purpose of the Lord will always show itself through his plans so make our plans but let God make his plans.
