The DC movie Wonder Woman (PG-13) opened this last weekend being a box office hit taking in 129M by Tuesday! For good reason.
The movie was well-paced, the music was captivating, the characters were interesting, and the plot was easy to follow. A well-done movie starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine directed by the first ever Marvel or DC female director (and first ever to command a budget of over $100 million) Patty Jenkins.
There was a particular line in the movie that reminded me of another well-done story, Jesus’ story.
Wonder Woman is facing down the main antagonist of the movie Ares. She has recently been faced with the fact of Ares’s evil tendencies, and that he can do unspeakable horror without outside influence. She is horrified and struggling as her mission was to free mankind from an evil villain, but mankind can be that villain.
In a climatic scene Ares yells at her “They don’t deserve us!”
Wonder Woman responds with, “They don’t deserve us. It’s not about what they deserve, but what you believe. And I believe in love.”
This scene made me want to shout for joy because it reminded me of a greater joy!
We don’t deserve the salvation that Jesus brought upon the cross.
Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We don’t deserve a hero to swoop in and save us, we brought sin and destruction upon ourselves but God wasn’t happy to leave us there.
1 John 3:16 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.”
Jesus’ love is not deserved and we have no reason for him to do so for us but he loved us anyway, showing us by dying for us so that we may know him. I’m thankful that the most powerful stories and movies can bring us back to the greatest story ever told.
