John 1:12, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.”
This passage is a reminder that salvation is something that cannot be earned, but rather, it is given to those who believe in Jesus as their Lord and personal Savior. It is only through one’s faith and trust in Jesus can a person have a relationship with God and be called His child. It paints a beautiful picture of adoption. A child is being adopted not because he or she earns it but because the one adopting has love and compassion towards the child. Ephesians 2:4-6 illustrates this picture saying, “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” Because of God’s great love for us, He has given us life and has adopted us into Himself. He took the first step and showed us His love by dying for us and for our sins. Christ chose us and has given us the right to be His child despite of who we are as sinners. That’s the beauty of God’s love.
There are times when I have doubts regarding my relationship with the Lord, but my life verse always reminds me that I am a child of God because of who I am in Christ. Also, it humbles my heart knowing that apart from Jesus and His love for me, I am going to be lost and will not find the true meaning and purpose of life.
