Recently, Pastor David challenged the staff to listen for a word that God was telling us.  But, not just any word.  No, this word is going to be what God wants us to focus on for the year.  A word that would bring personal and spiritual growth.  Well for me the word was obvious, serve.

Ok God, I’m listening!  So, I went to the Bible to see what the scripture says about serving.  There are so many references to serving, but here are a few that stood out to me.

1 Peter 4:10 –  As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace

Acts 20:35  In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Matthew 20:28  Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

The last is the one that stands out to me the most.  Even Jesus came to serve and not be served.  Then why not me???  I’m supposed to live my life like Jesus so then of course I should serve.  But, our human nature has a tendency to want to think of ourselves more than we think of blessing others.  And I often forget that blessing others is also blessing myself.

Just like what it says in Acts, when I give myself selflessly to the service of others it truly is more blessed to give than receive.  We have to look at service as a form of worship.  What a better way to worship than to do what He was sent here to do, and what He has asked us to do?

My challenge this year is that I continue to seek out opportunities that I can serve the people of our church.  Ways I can serve the Children’s Ministry.  But, I’m also going to look for ways I can challenge others to serve as well.

My prayer is that you too will look for ways you can serve others.
